THE CHAPEL'S MiSSION TODAY
The Society of Mary, Queen of Peace exists to promote the salvation of souls through the preservation and use of the historic and sacred edifice of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Chapel. Formally recognized in 2025 by Bishop Alfred A. Schlert as a Private Association of the Christian Faithful in the Diocese of Allentown, the Society carries forward years of dedication to this sacred place through Catholic worship and devotion, restoration, historic preservation, and community involvement. Receiving no financial support from the Diocese, our work is made possible by the generosity of donors, volunteers, members, and friends who help ensure that Mary Queen of Peace remains a living Catholic sacred place for generations to come.

Our History
Founded in 1920, Mary Queen of Peace served generations of Catholics in Pottsville, with Rev. George W. Shay appointed to take charge on May 4, 1920. The present Spanish Mission-style church was later built and solemnly dedicated on August 25, 1929, becoming a center of Catholic worship, education, devotion, and community life for generations. Following the suppression of the former parish in 2008, years of dedicated efforts by former parishioners and friends helped preserve the church and its Catholic heritage. In 2025, a new chapter began as the Society of Mary, Queen of Peace worked in cooperation with the Diocese of Allentown to secure the future of the historic church as Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Chapel. Today, the Chapel once again welcomes the faithful for Mass, prayer, devotion, and fellowship while an ongoing restoration effort safeguards its sacred character, history, and beauty. More than a century after its founding, Mary Queen of Peace continues its mission as a living place of Catholic faith in Pottsville.
The Society of Mary Queen of Peace of Pottsville, Inc. is a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation and IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN: 33-1603537). By decree of the Diocese of Allentown, the Society is recognized as a Private Association of the Christian Faithful and is authorized to identify itself as Catholic in carrying out its mission of preserving Mary Queen of Peace as a Catholic sacred space for prayer, devotion, and community benefit. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
